Plymouth Pilots website launched

Logo design, A new owner’s area, and a migration from wordpress to squarespace

We just launched the new website for Neil and Lauren Humphrey of Plymouth Pilots, the legendary boatbuilders based in, yes you guessed it, Plymouth! For a company with such a long and well-known heritage, it is actually run by a very small family team, meaning these boats are not just handbuilt, they are truly artisan labours of love.

Neil and Lauren wanted to refresh their Wordpress website and have more control over adding functionality and content, but without the stress of added updates and headaches which they were getting, so I decided to switch them to Squarespace.

Overall Squarespace has a much nicer interface for clients to manage their websites, and when you’re putting in huge shifts building boats the last thing you need is complicated tech. Added to that I feel that really good, organic site SEO is more easily achievable in Squarespace, which will really help them to grow.

A totally new feature they wanted built was an Owner’s area, where owners of Pilots could come and share information with each other, meet up at rallies and events, and learn lots of DIY tips and tricks from Neil.

This was also a time where we decided to update the logo. This was a fairly lengthy process of testing out different ideas, but finally we discovered the right look and feel of an ‘ego-free’ family boatbuilder, with a nod to their original plaques of the 1970s and their distinctively shaped cabins.

This was a really nice job to work on, ….and happily still work on, as we still have lots of bits to work on to expand the Owner’s club…so watch this space!
