AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO
I was one of the very first drone operators in the UK when I made the video below for our client Meriski, with the original DJI Phantom attached to an early GoPro. When we made this film it wasn’t even possible to send a signal from the gimbal to the operator, so we were effectively flying blind, recording everything we could, and then using whatever footage was usable. This particular drone parked itself on a shelf in the sky during the last scene of the video and never came down!
I try and use a drone as sparingly as possible. It’s like having a limitless tripod, or an endless dolly, basically a beautiful little tool capable of some absolutely stunning shots, but like any other grip equipment, it must make sense in the scene you are shooting.

The first shoot I used a drone to film some footage with, and at the time it blew us all away. Little did we know how much better they would get and how they would affect the world in more ways than one.

Director Mat Laroche (also my cousin) was commissioned by Mazda to make a series of shorts on the MX3. He brought me along to shoot all the drone footage and we enjoyed a fine tour of the country visiting various famous locations known for their stunning roads.
